Conectas bids farewell to Pedro Paulo Poppovic, a friend and an inspiration. At 97 years old, the sociologist and human rights defender passed away today after a life of invaluable contribution to the consolidation of Brazilian democracy.
Pedro Paulo had a central role in the foundation and history of Conectas. He was the founder and for many years the editor of Sur, International Journal on Human Rights.
“Pedro Paulo inspired several generations who have worked at Conectas. He always had a smile and words of encouragement. He urged young activists to never give up on the dream of fighting for a fairer world. He will be deeply missed, and we will strive to honor his memory through our human rights work in Brazil and in the Global South.” Said Camila Asano, Executive Director at Conectas.
Beyond his work in the organization, Poppovic also contributed enormously to the roles he held, whether in public service, academia or in the publishing world.
“Pedro Paulo cut an extraordinary figure, as an editor, intellectual and educational leader. He was a restless person who was curious and widely read. He was deeply committed to democratic values. Those who had the privilege of knowing him more closely are left with his affection and enthusiasm. Pedro had radiant energy and intelligence which empowered everyone around him. He will be greatly missed, but he also leaves an enormous legacy that challenges us to keep fighting for a fairer world.” Said Oscar Vilhena Vieira, a founder of Conectas and a member of the organization’s Board of Directors.
At this time of profound sadness, we extend our solidarity and warmth to Pedro Paulo’s family. May they find comfort in the vastness of the legacy he built and in the admiration of the many people touched by his journey.
