The research seeks to reveal which are the cases of torture that reach the JWs and how they are judged by this body. Altogether, 455 judgments were analyzed that dealt with the crime of torture in the period 2005 to 2010. It was not possible, however, to identify how much this number represents the total number of cases received by the Courts. Considering the fact that Brazil still lacks data on torture crimes, we believe that the present study may contribute to the dissemination of information that is not very accessible, characterizing the first step towards a process of systematic collection of data on torture crimes in the country.
