Late on Wednesday evening, a ruling by the Constitutional Chamber of the Venezuelan Supreme Court determined that the Chamber will take over all the powers of the National Assembly, which in practice represents a dissolution of parliament by the Judiciary.

In a joint statement that Conectas endorses, several Venezuelan organizations condemned the ruling and called for “the necessary measures to be taken to overturn any ruling that violates the constitutional framework, that ignores the power of the popular vote represented by the elected National Assembly and that expedites the departure of the country from a democratic system that respects fundamental guarantees and human rights”.

“There is no provision in the constitution that permits the court, whose members are elected indirectly, to take over the functions of the National Assembly, a body that directly represents the population,” said the organizations in the statement.
