Txai Suruí appeals to the UN over the removal of trespassers from Indigenous territory in the Amazon region

The Indigenous leader called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to put pressure on Brazil to comply with the Supreme Court ruling and ensure protection of the Uru Eu Wau territory in Rondônia

On Friday (22), Txai Suruí alerted the UN Human Rights Council to the serious violations faced by the peoples of the Uru Eu Wau Wau Indigenous Territory in Rondônia, who have been suffering invasions of their land by non-Indigenous people. The Indigenous leader and activist urged the Council to pressure the Brazilian government to ensure the definitive removal of trespassers from the territory, as ordered by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) in 2020, but only initiated earlier this month. Her statement was delivered in partnership with Conectas, the Kanindé Ethno-Environmental Association and the Jupaú Association.

Furthermore, Txai stressed that the efficacy of the measure will depend on the Brazilian authorities’ commitment, including in addressing invasions that stem from an area dubbed Burareiro.

Uru Eu Wau Wau Indigenous Territory (Rondônia), located in the Brazilian Amazon, has been an ongoing target of invasions, putting the safety and survival of its peoples at risk. Despite the 2020 STF ruling, the removal of intruders only began in September 2025, following years of pressure from Indigenous and human rights organizations. According to Txai, the removal process must be fully completed as a matter of urgency, with safeguarding of leaders under threat, ensuring the integrity of the territory and respect for the constitutional rights of Indigenous peoples.
