Training Network for refugee reception groups, activities in Porto Alegre



From 18 to 20 March, in Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul state), The Rede de Capacitação a Refugiados e Migrantes (Training Network for Refugees and Migrants) will be holding a symposium and workshops to bring together representatives of civil society, public servants, students, journalists, managers and teams at shelters and members of reception committees and working groups on employability, to discuss the development of a local integration policy for refugees and migrants.

These activities, which will take place at the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Rio Grande do Sul (rua Otávio Francisco Caruso da Rocha nº 800 and 700, Bairro Praia de Belas), are part of the project “Network activities: training people involved in the reception, integration and interiorisation of refugees and migrants in Brazil.” This initiative focuses on training civil servants and civil society organisations involved in receiving, sheltering and integrating migrants and refugees, particularly Venezuelans, in Brazil.

Conectas is a member of the Network and will be in charge of the workshop on migration and refuge in Brazil, for communicators and journalists, as well as the workshop on training in communication, for civil society professionals. The project is funded by the Canadian Embassy in Brazil.

Symposium – The symposium “Refugees and migrants in Rio Grande do Sul: how to receive and integrate?” will be in the morning on 19 March. The activity will consist of two round tables: one on the context of the National Migration Policy and the other on local experiences regarding attention given to migrants and refugees. Workshops – From 18 to 20 March, there will be workshops aimed at members of refugee and migrant committees; reception committees; working groups on employability; managers and teams at shelters; civil servants and civil society organisations involved in receiving, sheltering and integrating refugees and migrants.

The workshops will cover: the new migration law, refugee law, rights and access to the legal system; migration management at a local level; workers’ rights and the prevention of slave labour and people trafficking; migration and mental health; gender, human rights; migration and the protective network and local integration.

In addition, the workshop “The Press and the Fight against Xenophobia against Refugees and Migrants” will be aimed at journalists, press office staff, bloggers and other communications professionals involved in this theme. There will also be a Media Training session for spokespersons at institutions and organisations working in the area of the Reception and Integration of Refugees and Migrants.

Enrolment for the workshops closes at 12pm on 1 March and each participant can enrol in several workshops, as long as they do not take place at the same time. Members of the network include ESMPU (Federal Public Prosecutor’s Higher Education establishment), PFDC (Federal Attorney’s Office for Citizens’ Rights), MPT (Public Ministry for Labour), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), OIM (International Organisation for Migrants), Conectas Human Rights,  IMDH (Institute for Migration and Human Rights), DPU (Federal Public Defender’s Office), UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), the Peace Mission and UNICEF (the UN International Children’s Emergency Fund).
