Public statement – Conviction of those responsible for the attempted coup against Brazilian democracy

Conectas Human Rights recognizes the unique relevance and historic nature of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) decision to convict eight defendants, including former President Jair Messias Bolsonaro and members of the military leadership, for crimes against the Democratic Rule of Law. The sentence, handed down today after due process of law and rights of defense, confirms the conviction of the defendants for the crimes of attempting to violently abolish the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, criminal organization, aggravated damage to federal property, and deterioration of listed heritage sites.

This sentence represents a fundamental milestone in the protection of democratic institutions and the affirmation of the Constitution as the foundation of political and social life in Brazil, since the country has already faced other episodes of serious affronts to the democratic order without proportional accountability.

The consolidation of processes to hold those who undermine democracy accountable contributes to the construction of a political culture based on legality and the preservation of fundamental freedoms, and to deterring further attacks on democratic institutions. We also emphasize the importance of the independence of the Judiciary as a pillar of the Democratic Rule of Law. Thus, attempts at interference, whether internal or external, that undermine this democratic value are unacceptable.

At this historic moment, Conectas reaffirms its ongoing commitment to democracy, human rights, and the Democratic Rule of Law.
