In its second mission to the northern Brazilian state of Roraima to monitor the reception of Venezuelan immigrants who are fleeing the crisis in their country, Conectas Human Rights witnessed a problematic measure by the state government: dozens of these people were removed from an area around the city’s main bus station where they were living in precarious conditions in Boa Vista, the state capital, and taken by public security forces to a gymnasium that is not in the least bit prepared to receive people with dignity.
The new location has no drinking water or adequate hygiene. Watch the statement below by Camila Lissa Asano, coordinator of programs at Conectas, direct from the Roraima state capital.
