Opinion: In the UN, Brazil gives speech detached from rest of the world
The Foreign Ministry’s regressive position removes the country from the most pressing discussions on human rights

“We witnessed once again the Bolsonaro government using the international rostrum of the UN to play local politics and gesture to his most radical followers. What will the world’s leading democracies think when they hear the Brazilian Foreign Minister say that societies are ‘getting used to the idea that freedom can be sacrificed in the name of health’, in a direct criticism of the social isolation measures adopted by so many countries that are, so far, the most effective solution to avoid the spread of the virus?”
