It was with deep dismay and indignation that Conectas received the news of the recent racist and misogynistic attack suffered by state co-deputy Paula Nunes (PSOL/SP). We would like to express our solidarity with the parliamentarian, who suffered this violence while pregnant with her first child and demand that appropriate measures be taken regarding this inadmissible incident.
Racism and misogyny are evils that corrode the foundations of our society, undermining the values of diversity and inclusion that we must strive for. According to data from the research ‘Political Violence Against Black Women: 2020 Elections’ by the Marielle Franco Institute, 98.5% of the female candidates interviewed had suffered attacks during their electoral campaigns, 80% of which were online attacks.
Incidents of this nature represent an affront to democracy and to the fundamental principles of equality, justice and respect for human rights.
We wish to express our unwavering solidarity with Congresswoman Paula Nunes and all individuals who face discrimination on a daily basis. The fight against prejudice should be a collective one and it is imperative that we unite in eradicating these displays of hatred in our society.
We urge the competent authorities to thoroughly investigate these acts of intolerance and to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and held accountable, guaranteeing the enforcement of Law 14.192/2021, which criminalizes political violence against women.
We reaffirm our commitment to building an anti-racist society that is fair, equitable and inclusive, in which every citizen can exercise their fundamental rights without fearing reprisals based on their gender identity, race, or any other characteristic.
