This afternoon, April 13, 84 civil society organizations came together to call on Brazil’s senators to approve the Lower House Substitute Bill No. 7/2016 that repeals the Foreigner Act and replaces it with the new Immigration Law.
According to the joint statement, the bill “is consistent with a more just, free and democratic society” and it “modernizes the system for receiving and registering immigrants”. The statement also emphasizes that the new Immigration Law is the result of a broad process of public debate and also a response to a long-term demand of the organizations.
The document was sent to senators with the intention of influencing the vote that is scheduled for tomorrow, April 11, in the afternoon. If approved, the bill will be sent to President Michel Temer to be signed into law.
