Museum of Immigration stages debate on religion, human rights and migration

Round table with activists, researchers and religious leaders to address the theme of the 29th issue of the Sur Journal

On Friday, December 13, Conectas and the Museum of Immigration will stage a round table conversation with researchers, activists and religious leaders to discuss the role played by religions on the migration and human rights agenda. The event, which is open to the public and free of charge, will start at 3:30 pm at the Museum (Rua Visc. de Parnaíba, 1316 – Mooca, São Paulo – SP, 03164-300).

Topics such as the work of different religions in the reception and defense of migrants, the political influence of the evangelical caucus, religious dogmatism and gender, religious freedom and belief as a right will be some of the key points of the debate. The event also marks the launch of issue 29 of Sur Journal, which presents a comprehensive reflection of the topic in articles, interviews, profiles and artworks.

The following have confirmed their presence at the debate: Diamou Fallou Diop, a Senegalese fashion designer who is better known as Grand Mama; Father Assis Tavares, of the Catholic Church’s Afro-Brazilian Pastoral; Márcio Farias, coordinator of the Institutional Development and Communication Center of the Afro Brazil Museum; Sheik Mohamad Al Bukai, director of Islamic Affairs at UNI (National Union of Islamic Organizations of Brazil); and Simone Bernard, a representative of the NGO Arsenal da Esperança (Arsenal of Hope), of SERMIG (Servizio Missionario Giovani). The debate will be moderated by Maryuri Mora Grisales, doctor of religious studies and executive editor of Sur.

About Sur

Sur – International Journal on Human Rights is published by Conectas and seeks to influence the global human rights agenda by producing, promoting and disseminating research and innovative ideas, primarily from the Global South, on the practice of human rights. The journal is published in Portuguese, English and Spanish with free online access for its readership of more than 20,000 people in over 100 countries.

The 29th issue has 26 contributions from 29 authors from 13 countries. In addition to articles, essays and case studies, this issue of Sur also features two interviews – one with the singer MC Tha, who fuses funk and spirituality to connect with Orisha deities on her debut album “Rito de Passá” (Rite of Passage). It also presents the profiles of five religious leaders from different faiths.

The documentary project “Híbridos, os espíritos do Brasil” (Hybrids, the spirits of Brazil) is another brand new content featured in this issue of the journal. Produced by a pair of French artists and researchers, this project is intended to immerse the viewer in the different Brazilian rituals using images and sounds characteristic of each one.
