Following a decision by the Ministry of Justice, the associate director of Conectas, Marcos Fuchs, has been reappointed to the CNPCP (National Criminal and Prison Policy Council). The decision, published on January 14, grants him a new term of two years on the council.
In addition to monitoring conditions in Brazilian prisons and proposing ways to improve standards of prison sentence enforcement, the CNPCP is one of the chief articulators of proposals to the Ministry of Justice on how to improve the country’s prison policy. As a result, Fuchs, who is also executive director of the Pro Bono Institute and a member of the São Paulo Community Prison Oversight Council, will continue to take to the CNPCP the priority issues of Conectas and other civil society organizations that work with the topic.
“We shall remain firm and focused in the struggle to remedy the chronic situation of violations that affect the Brazilian prison system,” he said. According to Fuchs, mass incarceration, the negative impact of the Drug Law and abusive searches of prison visitors will be the main issues of his second term.
