Conectas is attending COP30, in Belém (PA), reinforcing the connection between socio-environmental justice and human rights in climate crisis discussions. In a global context of setbacks in the achievement of goals and low climate ambition, the event should intensify the pressure from civil society for concrete responses to the climate emergency. The event starts today (10) and continues until November 21st.
Social participation becomes particularly relevant in Brazilian soil, given the democratic nature of the country and the plurality of the areas of activity:
Blue Zone: an accredited space for the UN where organizations such as Conectas monitor negotiations and carry out parallel events, bringing community voices and local peoples to the decision-making spaces.
Green Zone: open to the public, it is also a stage of tensions with economic sectors, while also harboring important resistance and dialog spaces, such as the Human Rights Pavilion of the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC).
Yellow Zone: an innovation built by civil society itself, with highlights including the Peoples’ Summit at the UFPA, the COP Center of the Climate Observatory, and the Arayara Hub.
Despite the challenges – such as the limited number of credentials and the high accommodation costs –, Conectas emphasizes the need to ensure the quality of participation and the safety of activists, particularly when it comes to populations and territories that are particularly affected by the climate crisis.
