Today, December 2, Conectas launched the campaign “What sign do you hold up? If our cause is the same, contribute”. The campaign asks for financial support from individuals, who can donate on the organization’s website using Paypal. The support of Brazilians for social causes is essential to enable the work of people who defend, on a daily basis, causes such as the promotion of human rights.
Giving Tuesday is a global initiative already adopted in many countries to promote solidarity and collective engagement among people, organizations, societies and countries.
According to Muriel Asseraf, coordinator of Institutional Development at Conectas, the campaign is the result of the growing need to involve society in the protection and monitoring of human rights.
“There is perhaps no other area in which this participation is so indispensable. The realization of human rights and the democratic rule of law necessarily involve an expansion of the public debate on the policies and practices that violate human rights,” she said.
“By paving the way for a more profound involvement of its supporters, Conectas is signaling its desire to take the work of the organization closer to the people who believe in and fight for the same cause.”
All the money raised in the campaign will be spent on the initiatives of Conectas, such as its work for a more democratic justice system, its monitoring of Brazil’s foreign policy and its positions in the UN, and the strengthening of human rights organizations in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Currently, the organization is financed by private national and international foundations (86% of the total funds received in 2014) and multilateral public funds (14%). Conectas does not receive any funding from the Brazilian federal government or from state or municipal governments. The list of current donors and supporters can be seen on our Accountability page, where Conectas periodically releases its annual reports and its audited financial statements.
The organization plans to increase the amount of support from individuals, with the goal of diversifying its sources of funding and improving its relations with Brazilian society.
In 2014, in an effort to improve its transparency and accountability, it launched a website dedicated to explaining in more detail the activities it develops and a frequently asked questions section.
