Representatives of movements of mothers of victims of state violence and human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, Conectas Human Rights, the Vladimir Herzog Institute (IVH), the D. Paulo Evaristo Arns Human Rights Defense Commission – Arns Commission, the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP) and the Washington Brazil Office (WBO) participated on Friday (12th) in a hearing of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the Organization of American States (OAS), where they denounced Brazil for violations during police operations in the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Bahia.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Jan Jarab, regional representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for South America, along with the commissioners of the IACHR.
“We were eager for this hearing with the IACHR because we have witnessed the government of the state of São Paulo, turning the Baixada Santista into a true testing ground, resulting in many deaths. And when we speak out, this same government has been prepared to criminalize entire families, as well as the victims themselves. We cannot accept this in silence,” says Débora Maria da Silva, from the May Mothers movement.
Between January 2023 and May 2024, data from the National Public Security Information System of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (Sinesp/MJSP) on Deaths by Police Intervention indicate that at least 4,270 people were killed, which represents eight deaths by police intervention per day over a 16-month period.
