The so-called “Agenda Brazil”, a package of measures proposed by the Senate on the justification of finding solutions for the economic and political crises in the country, has sparked condemnation from environmental and human rights organizations.

In a public statement, they warn of the risk that the proposals will cause the destruction of the heritage of indigenous populations and a worsening of environmental disasters.

“The document surprises by ignoring events such as the water and energy crisis, which requires an increase in environmental conservation, not a reduction,” reads the statement.

Among the points listed in the Agenda Brazil, the organizations denounced as a setback the revision of regulations for the mining sector, for the licensing of investments in coastal areas, protected natural areas and historic cities, and for indigenous areas, as a way of making them compatible with productive activities.

They also drew attention to the Structural Works Bill, which simplifies environmental licensing procedures for large-scale construction projects.
