{"id":6130,"date":"2017-05-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-05-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.conectas.org.inf.br\/wp\/noticias\/doce-river-disaster-on-the-agenda\/"},"modified":"2021-04-12T18:34:34","modified_gmt":"2021-04-12T18:34:34","slug":"doce-river-disaster-on-the-agenda","status":"publish","type":"noticia","link":"https:\/\/conectas.org\/en\/noticias\/doce-river-disaster-on-the-agenda\/","title":"Doce River disaster on the agenda","content":"<div class=\"tts_content_wrapper_1\" ><p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 350px; height: 233px;\" src=\"\/arquivos\/editor\/images\/Site%20(720x480)%20Conflitos%20Sociais_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Brazil is at a dramatic juncture in its democracy given the situation of serious human rights violations that has deteriorated since the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff last year, with numerous laws pending in Congress that loosen environmental legislation in favor of private interests.<\/p>\n<p>These strong threats of setbacks are occurring even though we recently witnessed one of the worst environmental crimes in Brazil\u2019s history \u2013 the bursting of an iron ore waste dam owned by Samarco (a joint venture between Vale and BHP Billiton) in November 2015. The case has become symbolic of the problems in the relationship between business and human rights.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, Conectas, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mabnacional.org.br\/\"><u>MAB<\/u><\/a> (Movement of People Affected by Dams) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ridhglobal\/\"><u>RIDH<\/u><\/a> (International Network of Human Rights) are organizing the event \u201cSocial and environmental conflicts and setbacks in the legal framework in Brazil: the symbolic case of the Doce River basin\u201d. The seminar will take place in Geneva at the headquarters of the UN Human Rights Council as a side event to its 35th regular session.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar can be watched live on Facebook, starting at
