What is the standard of criminal defense in Latin America? How can people, especially the poor, who are charged with committing a crime defend themselves fairly? What are countries in the region doing to guarantee conditions that permit fair and impartial trials?<\/div>\n
To debate these and other questions, experts, authorities and civil society representatives will attend the Seminar on Effective Criminal Defense in Latin America<\/strong>, to be held on September 20, from 9 am to 6:30 pm, in the auditorium of FGV Law School in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/div>\n
Featuring among the speakers are Ed Lloyd-Cape, an internationally known professor and researcher in the field of criminal justice; Gonzalo Reys Sala, of the Public Defense Institute of Nuevo Le\u00f3n, Mexico; and James Cavallaro, president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the OAS.<\/div>\n
The speakers will give an overview of the current context of regional standards in Latin America and discuss mechanisms for making progress in this field. The seminar will also include a discussion on the use of pre-trial detention and the legislative, legal and criminal policy changes in Brazil.<\/div>\n

\u201cThe debates are intended to help strengthen the rights and guarantees of suspects, defendants and convicts in criminal cases, especially for people with limited economic resources, contributing to an effective defense across the region,\u201d explained F\u00e1bio Tofic Simantob, president of IDDD.<\/p>\n

The book \u201cEffective Criminal Defense in Latin America<\/strong>\u201d will be launched after the seminar. The research for the book began in mid-2012 and it compiles studies conducted in six countries from the continent (Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, Argentina, Colombia and Peru) on the legal and structural conditions for guaranteeing the right to a fair trial in each one.<\/div>\n
\n

\u201cOur goal in conducting this long and important study was to examine a fundamental question: what quality and level of access to an effective defense does a person, particularly a low-income person, have when they are charged with committing a crime?\u201d said Jessica Morris, executive director of Conectas.<\/p>\n
