Arbitrary detention of human rights defenders, disproportionate use of force by the security forces, shortcomings of the justice system and mistreatment of detainees. The list of violations committed by the Bahraini government is long and, according to 12 international human rights organizations, has not stopped growing since 2011. Given this \u201ccontinued deterioration\u201d, the organizations are calling for the approval of a resolution on the situation in the country in the UN Human Rights Council (HRC).\u00a0Despite these serious claims of violations, no resolution has yet been adopted by the HRC.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge your delegation to build upon the three earlier joint statements delivered at the Human Rights Council on this issue, and to send a strong message to the government of Bahrain that it should take urgent, concrete and effective steps to improve the human rights situation in the country,\u201d reads the letter<\/u><\/a> sent to the representatives of the Council.<\/p>\n

The organizations recommended that the issue be discussed at the next session of the HRC in September. In the text of the resolution, they said, the Bahraini government should be called upon to observe the recommendations made by the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) and by other States during its Universal Periodic Review in the UN \u2013 the mechanism to assess the human rights conditions in the organization\u2019s member countries.<\/p>\n<\/div>
