{"id":4988,"date":"2015-06-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-06-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.conectas.org.inf.br\/wp\/noticias\/global-condemnation\/"},"modified":"2021-04-28T01:31:05","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T01:31:05","slug":"global-condemnation","status":"publish","type":"noticia","link":"https:\/\/conectas.org\/en\/noticias\/global-condemnation\/","title":"Global condemnation","content":"<div class=\"tts_content_wrapper_1\" ><p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 680px; height: 390px;\" src=\"\/arquivos\/editor\/images\/Assinatura_Redu%C3%A7%C3%A3o_site.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In a statement published this morning, June 29, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Amnesty International USA<\/u><\/a>, in conjunction with Conectas, spoke out against the Constitutional Amendment Proposal (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com.br\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CB0QFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.camara.gov.br%2FproposicoesWeb%2Ffichadetramitacao%3FidProposicao%3D14493&amp;ei=6pORVauvBIPusAWTvqewBA&amp;usg=AFQjCNFtKKbKEtChdnc6C_k_px-tUmNzZw&amp;sig2=_KjimisGH9MlWfHmmBTd1A&amp;bvm=bv.96783405,d.b2w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Amendment 171\/1993<\/u><\/a>) that reduces the age of criminal responsibility from 18 to 16. According to the president of the Lower House of Congress, Eduardo Cunha, the text will be voted tomorrow morning in a full session of the house. The threat to the rights of children in Brazil would be a serious setback not only to the country, but to the entire region, undermining the country\u2019s credibility in speaking out for the protection of human rights,\u201d said the organization.<\/p>\n<p>With this statement, Amnesty USA has joined a growing list of international organizations, agencies and authorities that have criticized the measure. Last week, the amendment was the <a href=\"https:\/\/conectas.org\/en\/actions\/justice\/news\/40128-reduction-of-the-age-of-criminal-responsibility-in-the-un\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>subject of condemnation<\/u><\/a> in the UN Human Rights Council, in Geneva, and of a <a href=\"https:\/\/conectas.org\/arquivos\/editor\/files\/Carta_HRC29_criminal_age_Brazil_member_States_final_Assinaturas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>joint letter<\/u><\/a> signed by 92 human rights organizations around the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Click <a
