One of the most important Brazilian journalists and one of the main artists whose pen has told the recent history of Brazil were those unanimously chosen by the commission that organizes the Vladimir Herzog Amnesty and Human Rights Journalistic Award for tributes in the special awards of its 48<\/span>th<\/span> edition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jamil Chade has visited 70 countries crossing borders with refugees, witnessing crimes against humanity, traveling with popes or covering diplomatic summits. With his office at the UN headquarters in Geneva, hew as elected the second most admired journalist in Brazil in 2025. Chade was nominated 4 times as a finalist for the Jabuti literary award. He is an ambassador of Instituto Adus, a member of the Instituto Vladimir Herzog council, and one of the researchers of the National Truth Commission. He currently writes columns at ICL Not\u00edcias, the TMC radio, Carta Capital, Vero, and TV Brasil.<\/span><\/p>\n

Paulo Caruso, the boy who shared a womb and passion for drawing with his twin brother, Chico, made caricature cartoons into his daily chronicle and humor his sharpest weapon. With the precision of his graduation in Architecture and the levity of someone who saw poetry in political absurdity, Paulo was one of the interpreters of Brazil\u2019s recent history. A member of the writing staff of publications like O Pasquim and Isto\u00c9, he was the resident visual artist for TV Cultura\u2019s Roda Viva interview program for over three decades. His passing in 2023, at the age of 73, left the country\u2019s sketch table emptier.<\/span><\/p>\n

Organizing and promoting commission<\/b><\/h2>\n

Since its first edition, offered in 1979, the award celebrates the life and work of journalist Vladimir Herzog, tortured and murdered by the civil-military dictatorship on October 25, 1975, in the facilities of DOI-CODI (Information Operations Office of the Center of Internal Defense Operations), in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/span><\/p>\n

The award is organized by the Instituto Pr\u00eamio Vladimir Herzog, a civil association of private law, not run for profit or political-partisan purposes, founded in November 2022 in S\u00e3o Paulo. The entity gathers 18 civil society institutions, in addition to the Herzog family: Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Brasileira de Imprensa (ABI); Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Brasileira de Jornalismo Investigativo (ABRAJI); Artigo 19; Comiss\u00e3o Justi\u00e7a e Paz da Arquidiocese de S\u00e3o Paulo; Conectas Direitos Humanos; Escola de Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es e Artes da Universidade de S\u00e3o Paulo (ECA\/USP); Federa\u00e7\u00e3o Nacional dos Jornalistas (FENAJ); Geled\u00e9s; Conselho Federal da Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB Nacional); Instituto Vladimir Herzog, Instituto Socioambiental (ISA); Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil \u2013 Sec\u00e7\u00e3o S\u00e3o Paulo; Ouvidoria da Pol\u00edcia do Estado de S\u00e3o Paulo; Coletivo Periferia em Movimento; Sindicato dos Jornalistas Profissionais no Estado de S\u00e3o Paulo; Sociedade Brasileira dos Estudos Interdisciplinares da Comunica\u00e7\u00e3o (Intercom), SBPJor \u2013 Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Brasileira de Pesquisadores em Jornalismo, and Uni\u00e3o Brasileira de Escritores (UBE). <\/span><\/p>\n

The 48<\/span>th<\/span> Vladimir Herzog Amnesty and Human Rights Journalistic Award is sponsored by Petrobr\u00e1s, Caixa, and the Federal Government through the Culture Incentive Act. In this edition, an arc of alliances formed by Pontif\u00edcia Universidade Cat\u00f3lica de S\u00e3o Paulo (PUCSP), Teatro da PUC, TV PUC, CDI, and OBOR\u00c9 will act as institutional partners.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, the ceremony will be preceded by a Conversation Panel with the authors of the awarded productions and a visit to the Vladimir Herzog Memorial Square Recognition Walkway \u2013 Rua Santo Ant\u00f4nio, 33, Bela Vista \u2013 S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 SP, behind the S\u00e3o Paulo Municipal Chamber of Representatives, in front of the Bandeira Terminal.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>
