Although it comes in response to\u00a0a long-time demand from civil society, the creation of the National Human Rights Council (Law 12,986<\/u><\/a>), replacing the Council for the Defense of the Rights of the Human Person (CDDPH), is already the target of criticism from organizations traditionally associated with the topic of human rights.<\/p>\n

According to 10 associations and 15 NGOs, the Special Office for Human Rights of the Presidency has acted rashly by releasing the\u00a0notice<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to select the members of the new body, without any prior debate with the third sector.<\/p>\n

The organizations have sent a\u00a0letter<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to Minister Ideli Salvati, of the Special Office for Human Rights, in which they assert that the premature release of the notice \u201cis not in keeping with the measures to substantially encourage and organize social participation\u201d.<\/p>\n

They also emphasize that only through broad political debate will it be possible to ensure a pluralistic and agreed-upon choice that guarantees the representativeness of different sectors and segments in the new body.<\/p>\n
