This Wednesday (18), the parents of Marco Aur\u00e9lio Cardenas Acosta, a medicine student killed by the S\u00e3o Paulo State Military Police in November 2024, will file a new appeal with the United Nations (UN), asking for the state government to be held accountable for the death of their son, with the Brazilian State being put to task for human rights violations resulting from police violence throughout the country. The complaint will be filed with Conectas Direitos Humanos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Julio Cesar Acosta Navarro and Silvia M\u00f4nica Cardenas Prado will submit the appeal during the 59<\/span>th<\/span> session of the UN Human Rights Council, held between June 16<\/span>th<\/span> and July 9<\/span>th<\/span> in Geneva. In the complaint, in addition to claiming accountability for the police officers involved in Marco Aur\u00e9lio\u2019s case, the victim\u2019s family and Conectas ask that the UN recommend a series of measures to the Brazilian State in order to reduce police brutality and offer adequate assistance to victims and their families.<\/span><\/p>\n

The appeal is part of the activities that will be led by Conectas to expose the worsening of police brutality in the State of S\u00e3o Paulo and throughout Brazil. On Thursday (19<\/span>th<\/span>), the organization will hold a parallel event on the subject during the schedule of the Council meeting. The panel will be held at 10:00 a.m. Bras\u00edlia time (03:00 p.m. in Geneva time).<\/span><\/p>\n

The speakers in the event will include Marco Aur\u00e9lio\u2019s parents; the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association, Gina Romero; the United Nations Special Rapporteur on arbitrary executions, Morris Tidball-Binz; attorney and international law and human rights professor at FGV, Thiago Amparo, and the Chief Executive Officer for Conectas, Camila Asano. Amparo will present the results of the <\/span>Mapas da Injusti\u00e7a <\/span><\/i>(Injustice Maps) survey, carried out under his coordination and offering data on police brutality against the Black population of S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>
