Registrations are now open for the 47<\/span>th<\/span> edition of the <\/span>Vladimir Herzog Journalism Award for Amnesty and Human Rights <\/b>between May 10<\/span>th<\/span> and June 10<\/span>th<\/span>, 2025. This renowned Brazilian press award acknowledges journalists, photojournalists, writers and sketch artists who, in their daily work, uphold democracy, justice, and human rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

Exceptionally, as a way to pay respects on the 50<\/span>th<\/span> anniversary of the assassination of Vlado, the face of the Award, and to bring up agendas on Brazilian politics, attacks against democratic rule of law and ways in which Brazilian institutions, on all fronts, are working to defend our Democracy,  the Organizing Committee established a new award category this. The <\/span>Additional Category: Defense of Democracy<\/b> takes individual or team applications, limited to just one work by author or team of authors, produced between January 8<\/span>th<\/span>, 2023, and September 23<\/span>rd<\/span>, 2025. For this category, registrations will be accepted by 06:00 PM of September 23, 2025. <\/span><\/p>\n

Organizing committee and promoter<\/b><\/h2>\n

Since its first edition in 1979, the Vladimir Herzog Journalism Award pays tribute to communication personalities and professionals who excel in the promotion of fundamental human rights, celebrating the life and work of journalist Vladimir Herzog, tortured and assassinated by the Civil-Military Dictatorship on October 25, 1975 within the facilities of DOI-CODI (Department of Information Operations \u2014 Center for Internal Defense Operations) in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2023, in its historic 45-year edition, the award has been organized by <\/span>Instituto Pr\u00eamio Vladimir Herzog<\/span><\/i>, a non-profit private civil association without ties to political parties, founded in November 2022 in S\u00e3o Paulo. The entity gathers 18 civil society institutions, in addition to the Herzog family: <\/span>Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Brasileira de Imprensa<\/span><\/i> (ABI, the Brazilian Press Association); <\/span>Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Brasileira de Jornalismo Investigativo<\/span><\/i> (ABRAJI, the Brazilian Investigative Journalism Association); <\/span>Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Brasileira de Pesquisadores em Jornalismo<\/span><\/i> (ABPJor, the Brazilian Association of Journalism Researchers); <\/span>Artigo 19<\/span><\/i>; the S\u00e3o Paulo Archdiocese Commission of Justice and Peace; <\/span>Conectas Direitos Humanos<\/span><\/i>; the Arts and Communication School of <\/span>Universidade de S\u00e3o Paulo<\/span><\/i> (ECA\/USP); the National Journalist Federation (FENAJ); <\/span>Geled\u00e9s<\/span><\/i>; the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association (<\/span>OAB Nacional<\/span><\/i>); <\/span>Instituto Vladimir Herzog<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Instituto Socioambiental<\/span><\/i> (ISA); the Brazilian Bar Association \u2013S\u00e3o Paulo Chapter; the S\u00e3o Paulo State Police Ombudsman Office; <\/span>Periferia em Movimento<\/span><\/i>; the S\u00e3o Paulo State Professional Journalist\u2019s Union; <\/span>Sociedade Brasileira dos Estudos Interdisciplinares da Comunica\u00e7\u00e3o <\/span><\/i>(Intercom, the Brazilian Society of Interdisciplinary Communication Studies) and <\/span>Uni\u00e3o Brasileira de Escritores<\/span><\/i> (UBE, Brazilian Writer\u2019s Union).  <\/span><\/p>\n
