The appointed recipients of the Special Award are Fl\u00e1via Oliveira, Gizele Martins, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rede Wayuri de Comunicadores Ind\u00edgenas do Rio Negro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (The Wayuri Network of Rio Negro Indigenous Communicators).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These choices were based on relevant contributions to the current landscape of Brazilian journalism, with progress in the acknowledgment of diversity, inclusion, plural voices and causes, and shared protagonism when defending the right to information and democratizing access to communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Fl\u00e1via Oliveira <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a writer for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O Globo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> newspaper and a radio commentator at the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globo News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R\u00e1dio CBN<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> broadcasting stations. She has worked on the \u201cAngu de Grilo\u201d podcast with her daughter, Isabela Reis, also a journalist. Recipient of the Esso award (2001) in the category of Best Contribution to the Press with the series of reports \u201cRetratos do Rio\u201d (Portraits of the River, in a free translation). In 2003, she received the Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize of the United Nations Correspondents Association for a series of stories about human development together with Luciana Rodrigues. In the same year, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) awarded her the Journalism for Tolerance Prize for her work in the \u201cA Cor do Brasil\u201d (The Color of Brazil) supplement of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O Globo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newspaper. In 2023, the Brazilian government awarded her the rank of Officer of the Order of Rio Branco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gizele Martins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a journalist, community communicator and researcher. Master\u2019s degree in Education, Culture and Communication in Urban Outskirts (UERJ). PhD student in Communication (ECO\/UFRJ). Author of the book \u201cMilitariza\u00e7\u00e3o e censura \u2013 a luta por liberdade de express\u00e3o na Favela da Mar\u00e9\u201d (Militarization and censorship \u2013 the struggle for freedom of expression in the Mar\u00e9 Favela, in a free translation) (2019), articulator of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rede de Prote\u00e7\u00e3o de Jornalistas e Comunicadoras\/es <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Journalist and Communicator Protection Network) and works since 2020 in the Mar\u00e9 Mobilization Front. Member of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coaliz\u00e3o de M\u00eddias Perif\u00e9ricas, Faveladas, Quilombolas e Ind\u00edgenas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Coalition of Peripheral, Favela, Quilombola and Indigenous Media) \u2013 formed in 2023 by 11 media organizations. The articulation involves local and national political advocacy, knowledge exchanges and collective productions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rede Wayuri de Comunicadores Ind\u00edgenas do Rio Negro<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the Wayuri Network of Rio Negro Indigenous Communicators) is a popular media collective made up of approximately 30 communicators of the Bar\u00e9, Baniwa, Desana, Tariana, Tuyuka, Piratapuia, Tukano, Wanano, Hup\u2019dah, Yanomami, and Yeba Mas\u00e3 ethnicities. Created in 2017, the network produces weekly news to be distributed to the 750 indigenous communities of the demarcated lands from the lower to the upper course of the Rio Negro, in the municipalities of Barcelos, Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, and S\u00e3o Gabriel da Cachoeira, in the state of Amazonas. The Wayuri Network is connected to the Foirn (Brazilian acronym for the Federation of Indigenous Organizations of the Rio Negro), founded in 1987 to protect the territorial and cultural rights of the 23 peoples of the Rio Negro.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Calendar for the 46<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> Edition<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, the Herzog Award received 601 applications, 222 of which in text; 144 in video; 60 in audio; 56 in multimedia; 51 in photography; 50 in art and 18 in journalistic books. A group of 49 guests makes up the jury responsible for selecting the shortlisted participants in one of the seven awards categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 10<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, starting at 02:00 p.m., the organizing committee reconvenes, this time to define the winners. As has happened in the last twelve years, the choice is made official in a public session, broadcast live on YouTube. The award ceremony will take place on October 29<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from 08:00 p.m. to 09:30 p.m. at Tucarena, in S\u00e3o Paulo, preceded by the 13th Roundtable Discussion with the Winners, from 02:00 p.m. to 05:00 p.m., also at Tucarena.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Organizing Committee<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, in the historic 45<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-anniversary edition, the award was organized by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instituto Pr\u00eamio Vladimir Herzog<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a civil association of private law, non-profit and with no political-partisan affiliation, founded in November 2022 in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entity includes 17 civil society institutions, in addition to the Herzog family: the Brazilian Press Association (ABI); the Brazilian Investigative Journalism Association (ABRAJI); <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artigo 19<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the Peace and Justice Commission of the S\u00e3o Paulo Archidocese; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conectas Direitos Humanos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the College of Communication and Arts of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universidade de S\u00e3o Paulo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ECA\/USP); the National Federation of Journalists (FENAJ); <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geled\u00e9s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB National); <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instituto Vladimir Herzog<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the Socioenvironmental Institute (ISA); the Brazilian Bar Association \u2013 S\u00e3o Paulo Chapter; the Police Ombudsman of the S\u00e3o Paulo State Police; the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Periferia em Movimento <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collective; the Professional Journalists\u2019 Union of the State of S\u00e3o Paulo; the Brazilian Society of Interdisciplinary Communication Studies (Intercom) and the Brazilian Writers\u2019 Union (UBE).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever since its first edition, held in 1979, the award has celebrated the life and work of journalist Vladimir Herzog, tortured and murdered by the civilian-military dictatorship on October 25<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 1975, within the facilities of DOI-CODI (Department
