{"id":3747,"date":"2014-03-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.conectas.org.inf.br\/wp\/noticias\/humiliation-in-prisons\/"},"modified":"2018-01-29T20:18:40","modified_gmt":"2018-01-29T20:18:40","slug":"humiliation-in-prisons","status":"publish","type":"noticia","link":"https:\/\/conectas.org\/en\/noticias\/humiliation-in-prisons\/","title":"Humiliation in prisons","content":"<div class=\"tts_content_wrapper_1\" ><p>Conectas and dozens of other organizations have asked the president of the Senate, Renan Calheiros, to approve Bill No. 480, penned by Senator Ana Rita, that would ban abusive searches in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/conectas.org\/arquivos\/editor\/files\/Carta%20de%20Apoio%20ao%20PL%20da%20Revista.pdf\"><u>letter to Calheiros<\/u><\/a>, the organizations request that Congress \u201cabolish the requirement for visitors to prison facilities to strip completely naked and have their genitals and other body cavities inspected\u201d, a procedure known as an \u201coppressive search\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The organizations also point out that \u201cseveral Brazilian states \u2013 namely Goi\u00e1s, Esp\u00edrito Santo, Minas Gerais, Para\u00edba, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina \u2013 have already banned these searches through laws, decrees and legal rulings\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A week ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/conectas.org\/pt\/acoes\/justica\/noticia\/15017-nova-denuncia-na-onu\"><u>Conectas made an oral statement in the UN Human Rights Council<\/u><\/a>, in Geneva, against abusive searches.
