On Monday (03), civil society organizations sent a letter to the <\/span>OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development)<\/span><\/a> requesting that the institution demand high standards of Brazil in terms of safeguarding the environment, the climate and the indigenous peoples. The country is in the process of accession to the OECD. <\/span><\/p>\n

In June, the economic organization set out a <\/span>robust roadmap of criteria<\/span><\/a> to be met by Brazil. In the letter, over 40 civil society organizations called on the OECD to carry out a transparent and rigorous review of the roadmap for Brazil. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs we have seen in recent years and as we explain in the letter, the government of President Jair Bolsonaro has record levels of deforestation and has increased human rights violations for the sake of agricultural expansion\u201d,  it says in the letter. \u201cWe urge the OECD to demand that, in order to gain membership, Brazil must carry out significant policy reforms in these areas and show signs of progress, as a precondition to join the OECD.<\/span>\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>
