On Wednesday (7) civil society organisations sent an urgent appeal to the United Nations, requesting that urgent measures be demanded of the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate regarding bill of law 490, that sets out new rules for the demarcation of indigenous land in Brazil.<\/span><\/p>\n

The organisations APIB (Articulation of the Indigenous People of Brazil), Coiab (Coordination of the Indigenous Organisations of Brazilian Amaz\u00f4nia), ISA (Socio-environmental Institute), Arns Commission and Conectas Human Rights say that if the project is approved it will become impossible to demarcate indigenous land and approved territories and that the constitutional rights of the indigenous people of Brazil will be overturned.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe intention to remove the rights of the most vulnerable people in the midst of the pandemic is a serious matter. Moreover, the Supreme Federal Court, has also been asked to take action regarding protection. The proposal will resonate as the \u00b4nail in the coffin\u00b4 for the international agreements and investment that Brazil intends to obtain during the economic crisis.\u201d It says in the document, also sent to special rapporteurs of the IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights).<\/span><\/p>\n
