The gunshot that hit my son, hit my heart first. Every bullet that entered his body, entered mine too,\u201d says Debora Maria da Silva, one of the founders of the Mothers of May Movement. Her son, Edson Rog\u00e9rio Silva dos Santos, was 29 when he became one of the victims of the \u201cCrimes of May\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 12 May 2006, a criminal faction sparked a series of coordinated rebellions and outside the prisons, encouraged attacks on public agents. Between 12 and 21 May, members of death squads led a \u00b4wave of response\u00b4, marked by \u201cintense violence, summary executions, massacres, hundreds of murders and a number of disappearances,\u201d according to the report. The reprisal, which mainly affected the periphery and many people who did not have any links to the faction, came to be known as \u201cCrimes of May\u201d. It left more than 500 dead and 110 injured, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/conectas.org\/publicacoes\/download\/relatorio-crimes-de-maio-2006#:~:text=An%C3%A1lise%20dos%20Impactos%20dos%20Ataques%20do%20PCC%20em%20S%C3%A3o%20Paulo,m%C3%A3os%20de%20grupos%20de%20exterm%C3%ADnio.&amp;text=Foram%20analisadas%20ocorr%C3%AAncias%20que%20totalizam%20564%20mortos%20e%20110%20feridos.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>an evaluation carried out by Conectas and the Rio de Janeiro Federal University<\/strong>. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8.6 civilian deaths to every public agent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe same police officer who killed my husband, also killed by son.\u201d Silva states. \u201cWe can see that there is a plan to kill the undesirables. And this plan has a colour, class and gender.\u00a0 It affects the men more, but it also affects the women, the mothers. We must fight against this rifle that is aimed at black youths\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was an important statement. As well as helping to found a movement that seeks retractions for the murders and to make demands heard, sometimes in the music of the rapper Emicida, Silva also became a researcher. In 2018, she presented the results\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifesp.br\/reitoria\/dci\/images\/DCI\/CAAF\/Relatorio_Crimes_de_Maio_de_2006.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">of a study she took part in<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with researchers at Unifesp and Oxford University. According to the\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifesp.br\/reitoria\/dci\/images\/DCI\/Apresentac%CC%A7a%CC%83o_Resultados_Crimes_de_Maio_de_2006.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">findings<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 that analysed 60 Crimes of May deaths in the Baixada Santista \u2013 74.5% of the victims were young, between 15 and 29 years old; 91% were men and 62% died from gunshots to the chest and head. The research also verified that policy inquiries were prematurely closed, showing that the crimes have gone unpunished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Thayn\u00e1 Yaredy, Advisor on the Facing Institutional Violence Programme at Conectas, this high lethality and indifference to solving the crimes shows how the state has failed to uphold the fundamental guarantees of the victims and their families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Crucified by the violence<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four of the hundreds of victims do not register in the homicide statistics. These are the forced disappearances, who lost even the right to die. Paulo Alexandre Gomes, Paulinho, 23 years old is one of them. \u201cWe are left with the sense of loss and the hope that we will find out what happened. But who\u00b4s going to tell us?\u201d Mother Maria das Gra\u00e7as Gomes, asked the newspaper, \u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/infograficos.estadao.com.br\/cidades\/dominios-do-crime\/poder-da-ausencia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">O Estado de S.Paulo<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in 2016. \u201cI think God decided to take over and I don\u00b4t know where he is. One day I\u00b4ll find out. I don\u00b4t know when, but I will find out.\u201d She hopes, recalling the murder of her daughter, at 17 years of age. \u201cWe all have a mission here on Earth. Mine was to have three children \u2013 two of them were crucified by violence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further reading\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/conectas.org\/en\/noticias\/at-the-oas-organisations-denounce-15-years-since-the-disappearance-of-the-crimes-of-may-victims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>At the OAS, organisations denounce 15 years since the disappearance of the Crimes of May victims<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her third daughter, Francilene Gomes Fernandes, did a Masters in Social Services and wrote her dissertation on\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tede2.pucsp.br\/bitstream\/handle\/17543\/1\/Francilene%20Gomes%20Fernandes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>Barbarity and Human Rights: Summary Executions and Forced Disappearances in May (2006) in S\u00e3o Paulo<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0which she defended at the Pontif\u00edcia Universidade Cat\u00f3lica of S\u00e3o Paulo (PUC-SP). In this piece of work, she points out the similarities between the four victims, who were black or of mixed race and had not completed secondary school education. She also notes that in all four cases, witnesses saw police officers of the Tactical Force and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rota <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(special force of the S\u00e3o Paulo military police) approaching the victims before they disappeared. And she recalls, quoting\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.global.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/S--o-Paulo-sob-Achaque.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>research by the Harvard Law Faculty with the NGO, Global Justice<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that there is proof of abuse by the police, with the murder of people under circumstances that could not be described as legitimate defence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Fernandes writes, \u201cforced disappearance is defined as a serious kidnapping crime \u2013 a permanent crime, the end of which cannot be determined before any mortal remains are identified, because there is the possibility that the crime is still being committed.\u201d As well as her brother, the list of the disappeared also includes Ronaldo Proc\u00f3pio Alves, 30 who was on probation; and the car park attendants Diego Augusto Sant\u2019Anna, 15 and Everton dos Santos Pereira, 24.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Animated short film covers the 15 years since the Crimes of May. Watch<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LlVi0rcHGEY\" width=\"956\" height=\"538\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSadly, public agents involved in the deaths have not been held accountable, nor has there been any investigation of the death squads working at that time.\u201d Yaredy recalls. \u201cThis was an important example of the authorities\u00b4 indifference in holding public agents responsible for the execution of people, like other episodes in S\u00e3o Paulo and the one at Carandiru.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the month when the disappearances complete 15 years, Conectas and the State of S\u00e3o Paulo Public Defender\u00b4s Office are presenting a denouncement to the IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. \u201cThe idea is to oblige the state to take steps towards reparation for the damage and violence suffered by those who disappeared and their families; and to adopt structural measures throughout the whole country to curb and hold responsible the agents involved in the cases of forced disappearance.\u201d Explained Gabriel Sampaio, Coordinator of the Facing Institutional Violence Programme at Conectas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the fight for rights, for the mothers who lost their children at the hands of the state, no compensation will ever be enough. \u201cWhen you lose a husband, you become a widow. When you lose your father or mother, you are an orphan.\u201d Explains Debora Maria da Silva, of Mothers of May. \u201cBut there is no name for when you lose a child.
