Civil society organizations are being intimidated by Nicol\u00e1s Maduro’s government.\u00a0Attacks, though not physical, are carried out through various decrees and regulations. One of which is the publication \u00a0on 30th of March, where a new regulation was published in the\u00a0<\/span>official gazette<\/b><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>mandating NGOs (non-governmental organizations)\u00a0 to provide confidential data about their contributions and beneficiaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

The resolution is nothing new during Maduro’s government.\u00a0In October 2020, another resolution required international NGOs to register \u201cthe activities to be carried out in the territory\u201d and their intentions.\u00a0The resolutions appear with the intention of intimidating and restricting organizations in Venezuela.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the first quarter of 2021 alone,\u00a0<\/span>Cepaz (Centro de Justicia y paz)<\/b><\/a><\/span>\u00a0registered 215 cases of persecution and criminalization by the Maduro government.\u00a0For this reason, more than 90 civil society organizations, including Conectas, have signed a document that urges Venezuelan authorities to end repression against NGOs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cVenezuela is in dire need of\u00a0 a peaceful and democratic solution to the political, humanitarian and human rights crisis it faces.\u00a0However, such solution will not be possible without an independent and active civil society to promote it \u201d, the document says.<\/span><\/p>\n
