Since the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the federal government \u2013 despite denying the effects of Covid-19 and opposing the social isolation measures \u2013 has published a series of provisional executive orders relaxing labor rights and regulations after declaring a \u2018state of public calamity\u2019 in the country.<\/p>\n

With fewer guarantees, many people who are still working, especially those in rural areas, are now subjected not only to new risks caused by the virus but also old risks of exposure to slave labor conditions.<\/p>\n

This is the topic of a debate between Paula Nunes, Development and Socioenvironmental Rights advisor at Conectas, and Leonardo Sakamoto, journalist and director of the NGO Rep\u00f3rter Brasil, to take place this Wednesday, May 20, at 11 am.<\/p>\n

About the participants<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leonardo Sakamoto is a journalist with a PhD in Political Science from the University of S\u00e3o Paulo. He has covered armed conflicts in various countries and human rights violations all over Brazil. He is a journalism professor at the Catholic University of S\u00e3o Paulo and has been a visiting scholar at the Department of Politics of the New School for Social Research in New York (2015-2016) and a journalism professor at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s School of Communication and Art (2000-2002). He is director of the NGO Rep\u00f3rter Brasil and also serves on the United Nations Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery and the Liechtenstein Initiative \u2013 Financial Sector
\nCommission against Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking. He is the author of the books in Portuguese \u201cShort Stories To Start the Day\u201d (2012) and \u201cWhat I learned Being Insulted on the Internet\u201d (2016), among others.<\/p>\n

Paula Nunes is a lawyer and specialist in economic criminal law and an advisor for the Development and Socioenvironmental Rights program at Conectas.<\/p>\n
