{"id":19149,"date":"2019-10-14T20:02:12","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T20:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conectas.org\/?post_type=noticia&#038;p=19149"},"modified":"2021-04-05T13:42:18","modified_gmt":"2021-04-05T13:42:18","slug":"16th-international-human-rights-colloquium-gathers-activists","status":"publish","type":"noticia","link":"https:\/\/conectas.org\/en\/noticias\/16th-international-human-rights-colloquium-gathers-activists\/","title":"16TH International Human Rights Colloquium gathers activists","content":"<div class=\"tts_content_wrapper_1\" ><p>Against the backdrop of a rise in conservative policies and of the anti-rights movement<br \/>\nin Brazil and around the world, the International Human Rights Colloquium staged its<br \/>\n16th edition in October, bringing together nearly 50 human rights defenders and<br \/>\nactivists from places such as Hungary, the Philippines and Palestine, as well as from all<br \/>\nover Brazil.<br \/>\nThe event, organized since 2001 by Conectas, aims to promote integration and<br \/>\nexchange between human rights defenders from the Global South through the sharing<br \/>\nof knowledge, experiences and strategies to advance their agendas. Over the course of<br \/>\nits 16-year history, the Colloquium has brought together more than 1,600 activists<br \/>\nfrom 85 countries.<br \/>\n\u201cThe human rights movement faces participation constraints that in many cases imply<br \/>\na direct attack on the lives of its activists,\u201d explained Camila Asano, program<br \/>\ncoordinator at Conectas. \u201cIn this context, it is important to have a support network so<br \/>\nwe can grow stronger and share our experiences of resistance and struggle for rights.\u201d<br \/>\nThis year\u2019s edition of the Colloquium also included activities in Rio de Janeiro,<br \/>\nPernambuco and Bras\u00edlia as a form of immersion in the fieldwork conducted by<br \/>\nConectas and its partner organizations in recent years. The group was split up into four<br \/>\nteams that accompanied specific activities in each city.<br \/>\nImmersions<br \/>\nIn the visit to Rio de Janeiro, the participants got to know the work of the organization<br \/>\nRedes da Mar\u00e9, to see up close the challenges faced by activists and residents in one<br \/>\nof the largest complexes of favela communities in the city. This team also visited the<br \/>\nState Public Defender\u2019s Office and held meetings to learn about the international work<br \/>\nof the organizations CEJIL (Center for Justice and International Law) and ISER (Institute<br \/>\nfor Religious Studies) on Rio\u2019s public security policy.<\/p>\n<p>The immersion in Bras\u00edlia focused on political advocacy in the National Congress and<br \/>\nthe participants visited the offices and commissions of the Lower House of Congress<br \/>\nand the Senate, and they also spoke to representatives of the Federal Prosecutor\u2019s<br \/>\nOffice and visited embassies.<br \/>\nIn Pernambuco, the immersion got to know the work conducted by the Suape Forum,<br \/>\nwhich fights to guarantee the rights of quilombola communities affected by the<br \/>\nconstruction of the Suape Industrial Port Complex. In Recife, the team participated in<br \/>\nevents and debates organized by GAJOP (Office of Legal Counsel to Grassroots<br \/>\nOrganizations ).<br \/>\nIn S\u00e3o Paulo, the participants spent two days accompanying the work of organizations<br \/>\nthat monitor police violence in the state. Among its activities, the team visited CAAF<br \/>\n(Forensic Archeology and Anthropology Center of the Federal University of S\u00e3o<br \/>\nPaulo), which is identifying the human bones found in a secret grave from the time of<br \/>\nthe military dictatorship in the Perus cemetery, and CDHS (Human Rights Center of<br \/>\nSapopemba), which provides direct support to the local population in the tackling of<br \/>\npolice violence and prevention of genocide.
