On 3 June, in New York representatives of the Lima Group met with the International Contact Group (ICG) for discussions and to attempt to find a solution for the serious political and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.<\/span><\/p>\n

The decision that emerged from the meeting was to seek dialogue between nations allied to the government of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro in order to encourage free elections and to discuss possible peaceful solutions for a return to democracy in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a letter, Conectas and a further six civil society organisations expressed support for the initiative and reinforced the importance of diplomatic discussions to solve this kind of conflict. They also declared their support of the decision to encourage \u201cfree, just and reliable\u201d elections.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lima Group was formed in 2017 and has the role of promoting strategies for the stabilisation of Venezuela and acts as one of the principal adversaries of the Maduro government. It currently has 14 members, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Canada, Peru and Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n

Members of the ICG include Germany, France, Italy, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, as well as Bolivia, Ecuador, Uruguay and Costa Rica.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
