{"id":16128,"date":"2019-03-08T22:10:56","date_gmt":"2019-03-08T22:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conectas.org\/?post_type=noticia&#038;p=16128"},"modified":"2021-04-05T18:05:21","modified_gmt":"2021-04-05T18:05:21","slug":"8-march-international-day-to-mark-the-struggle-of-women","status":"publish","type":"noticia","link":"https:\/\/conectas.org\/en\/noticias\/8-march-international-day-to-mark-the-struggle-of-women\/","title":"8 march, international day to mark the struggle of women","content":"<div class=\"tts_content_wrapper_1\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Women\u2019s Day is a day to celebrate the historical progress gained through the considerable strength and determination of so many activists around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year on 8 March, Conectas invited women who occupy important positions in the fight for gender equality to speak on subjects such as the decriminalisation of abortion, the right to migrate, the struggle against racism and gender identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Who are they?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Alessandra Munduruku<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is an indigenous leader and coordinator at Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Pariri, \u00a0of the Munduruku people in M\u00e9dio Tapaj\u00f3s, in Par\u00e1. This young woman denounces the future impact of the Teles Pires Waterway, the construction of which is planned in the Tapaj\u00f3s River. According to Alessandra, the project is being developed with no regard for the ILO (International Labour Organisation) 169 Convention that calls for free and informed, prior consultation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Amara Moira<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a writer and a lecturer on literature, the first transgender woman to defend a doctoral thesis at Unicamp (University of Campinas) and one of the few transgender women in Brazil to hold this title. She is the author of the book \u201cE se eu fosse pu(t)ra\u201d \u00a0and one of the leading contributors to the compilation \u201cVida Trans: A coragem de existir\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>B\u00e1rbara Esmenia\u00a0<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a poet and editor at pad\u00ea editorial, where she published her books \u201c{Penetra-Fresta}\u201d and \u201cTribadismo: mas n\u00e3o s\u00f3 \u2013 13 poemas a la fancha + 17 Gritos de Abya Yala\u201d. She is well known on the cultural circuit and is a participant in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teatro das oprimidas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (theatre of the oppressed). She is an important activist for LGBT causes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Fabiana Severo<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is a regional human rights defender at the Federal Public Defender\u2019s Officer in Sao Paulo and ex-president of the National Human Rights Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Marifer Vargas<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is a Venezuelan migrant who came to Brazil after facing serious adversities in her country. She is currently working at the NGO C\u00e1ritas Brasileira as a socio-educational instructor assisting refugees seeking a new start in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Rebeca Mendes\u00a0<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a law student and mother of two children. She was the first Brazilian woman to request the right to a safe, legal abortion at the Supreme Federal Court, even though the conditions set out in the Criminal Code did not apply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Sueli Carneiro<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is a philosopher, adviser at Conectas, founder of Geled\u00e9s \u2013 Instituto da Mulher Negra and one of Brazil\u2019s leading figures in the fight against racism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To watch the video:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\"
