Conectas, in partnership with Observat\u00f3rio de Favelas and with the support of Instituto Maria and Jo\u00e3o Aleixo, is holding a discussion group on \u201cRace and Human Rights\u201d on Friday, 15 February, bringing together a number of researchers, black feminists and activists working on the antiracism struggle in Brazil. This open debate will start at 6pm, at the Observat\u00f3rio de Favelas (R. Teixeira Ribeiro, 535), in Mar\u00e9, in Rio de Janeiro.<\/span><\/p>\n

Subjects such as structural racism, the impact of the war on drugs on black youth, black feminism in Brazil and the role of racial equality on the human rights agenda will be discussed. The event also marks the launch of the <\/span>28th edition of Sur Magazine<\/b><\/a>, which, for the first time since it started, is entirely dedicated to this theme.<\/span><\/p>\n

The following have confirmed their participation: <\/span>Thula Pires<\/b>,\u00a0Undergraduate and Postgraduate Lecturer at the PUC-Rio Law School and Coordinator of the university\u2019s N\u00facleo de Reflex\u00e3o e Mem\u00f3ria Afrodescendente (Centre for Afrodescendant Reflection and Memory);\u00a0<\/span>L\u00edvia Casseres<\/b>, Public Defender in Rio de Janeiro and Coordinator of N\u00facleo Especializado contra a Desigualdade Racial (Specialist Centre against Racial Inequality) and\u00a0<\/span>Rhuam Fernandes<\/b>, Founder and Coordinator of the community organisation N\u00f3s por N\u00f3s (Us for Us) and a member of the Frente Negra UERJ (Black Front at the Rio de Janeiro State University).<\/span><\/p>\n

Also:\u00a0<\/span>Dona Maria Dalva<\/b>, from the Rede de Comunidades e Movimentos Contra a Viol\u00eancia (Community and Movements Network against Violence), in Rio de Janeiro and\u00a0<\/span>Bruna da Silva.<\/b> Aline Maia Nascimento<\/b>,\u00a0Researcher at Observat\u00f3rio de Favelas and\u00a0<\/span>Maryuri Mora Grisalses<\/b>, Sur Magazine Editor, will be mediating.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the event the mini-documentary \u201c<\/span>Luto para n\u00f3s \u00e9 verbo<\/span><\/a>\u201d (For us Grief is a Verb) will be shown. The documentary is the work of Natasha Neri, Director of the documentary \u201cAuto de Resist\u00eancia\u201d, winner of the \u2018Festival \u00c9 Tudo Verdade 2018\u2019, in which mothers and family members of victims of state violence, tell their stories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sur Magazine<\/b><\/p>\n

Sur \u2013 International Human Rights Magazine is published by Conectas. It seeks to influence the global human rights agenda, producing, promoting and publishing innovative research and ideas, principally from the Global South, on the practice of human rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

The publication is edited in Portuguese, English and Spanish, with free online access to a public of over 20,000 people, in over 100 countries. A hardcopy version is also distributed to some of the principal libraries, universities and international organisations and cultural centres around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 28<\/span>th<\/span> edition, entitled \u201cRace and Human Rights, Moving Structures\u201d, has 17 articles, written by 23 authors from six different countries, one of whom is the UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, E. Tendayi Achiume. Also, Researchers Juliana Borges, Thula Pires and Nath\u00e1lia Oliveira. Sueli Carnero was the Guest Editor of this edition. She is the Founder and current Director of Geled\u00e9s \u2013 Instituto da Mulher Negra (Institute for Black Women) and Adviser to Conectas. She is one of the main activists for black feminism in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n
