Conectas, the Get\u00falio Vargas Foundation Rio Law School and Abraji (Brazilian Association for Investigative Journalism) is holding the 2nd edition of the seminar \u201c30 years of the Citizens\u2019 Constitution: Progress and Setbacks\u201d. The event will take place next Monday (22\/10), from 9am, in the auditorium of the FGV Rio Law School, (address: Praia de Botafogo, 190). The debate will bring together public authorities, such as Justice Minister, Torquato Jardim and the ex-minister Nelson Jobim, as well as academics, researchers and representatives of civil society organisations.<\/p>\n

The debate will include discussion panels on the role of the judiciary as the guardian of the Constitution, austerity measures and the resulting social and environmental impacts and the process of the militarisation of public security. There will also be a panel on the impacts of the drugs policy and other forms of institutional violence of the Brazilian state.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that the landmark of three decades of the Federal Constitution is a crucial moment to bring together these important figures of our society and to hold a wide-ranging, balanced discussion on the progress and setbacks we have seen, in ensuring the fundamental pillars of human rights for everyone.\u201d Said Rafael Cust\u00f3dio, Coordinator of the Conectas Institutional Violence Programme.<\/p>\n

Some important figures of civil society and universities have confirmed their participation: Pedro Strozenberg, Public Defender in Rio de Janeiro, Jaqueline Muniz, from UFF (Fluminense Federal University), Lidiane Malaquias, from Redes da Mar\u00e9, Pedro Abramovay, from Open Society, Graziella David, from INESC (Institute for Socioeconomic Studies), Pedro Nery, Legislative Advisor to the Federal Senate and Juana Kweitel, from Conectas.<\/p>\n
