S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 \u00a0Conectas, The Get\u00falio Vargas Law School of S\u00e3o Paulo and the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper are holding the seminar \u201c30 years of the Constitution: Progress and Setbacks\u201d, on Monday 27 August. The debate will bring together public authorities, among them the Supreme Court President, C\u00e1rmen L\u00facia and Minister Gilmar Mendes, as well as Brazilian Judge Fl\u00e1via Piovesan, a member of the IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights) and former National Secretary for Citizenship.<\/p>\n

There will be panels to discuss the role of the judiciary as guardian of the Constitution and the social and environmental impacts of so-called \u2018austerity measures\u2019 like the spending ceiling law, to freeze public investment for the next twenty years.<\/p>\n

In addition, there will be round tables on the Brazilian prison system and how the international human rights pacts and treaties adopted by Brazil are being applied in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe this landmark of three decades of the Federal Constitution is a crucial moment to bring together these important people in our society and to engage in a far-reaching, balanced dialogue on how we have progressed and regressed in guaranteeing the fundamental pillars, human rights, for all people.\u201d Said Rafael Cust\u00f3dio, Coordinator on the Institutional Violence at Conectas.<\/p>\n

Some important figures from civil society and universities have confirmed their attendance, including Oscar Vilhena, Director of the Get\u00falio Vargas Foundation Law School, Ivo Herzog, from the Instituto Vladimir Herzog Advisory Board, Katia Maia, Executive Director at Oxfam Brasil, Conrado H\u00fcbner Mendes, Professor at the Law Faculty at USP and Columnist for the magazine \u00c9poca and Judge Alberto Toron.<\/p>\n

It is free to sign up for the event, however seats are limited. The seminar will start at 9am, in the auditorium at Folha\u00a0(Alameda Bar\u00e3o de Limeira, 425, Campos El\u00edseos), in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n
