Inconsistencies in the draft for the \u201cThe Global Compact for Migration\u201d raised a red flag for the 40 organisations that work on this issue. The group sent a letter to the Special Representative to the UN Secretary General on International Migration, Louise Arbour, in which they argue that the pact should include alternative answers to migratory issues, without securitization of migration, but instead providing protection and guaranteeing rights.<\/p>\n

In the letter, the organisations criticize the removal of important points, such as the right to non-refoulement, and highlight the need for migration not to be seen from the point of view of national security which tends to criminalise the migrant. In addition, the letter reiterates the importance of having objective, transparent criteria in regulating the migrant situation.<\/p>\n

The organisations hope that solid, transparent, accessible and efficient channels for participation can be established so they can continue to take part in the process and so that demands can be considered in the final document.<\/p>\n

The letters are signed by Conectas Human Rights and a further 39 organisations.<\/p>\n
