{"id":12648,"date":"2018-06-19T22:12:20","date_gmt":"2018-06-19T22:12:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conectas.org\/?post_type=noticia&#038;p=12648"},"modified":"2021-04-06T15:29:26","modified_gmt":"2021-04-06T15:29:26","slug":"usa-withdrawal-un-human-rights-council","status":"publish","type":"noticia","link":"https:\/\/conectas.org\/en\/noticias\/usa-withdrawal-un-human-rights-council\/","title":"USA announces withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council","content":"<div class=\"tts_content_wrapper_1\" ><p>With the justification that the UN Human Rights Council is \u201chypocritical\u201d and has a long-standing \u201cbias against Israel\u201d, the American Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo and the country\u2019s UN Ambassador, Nikki Haley, announced the United States\u2019 withdrawal from the body. The statement came during the 38<sup>th<\/sup> session of the Council that will be meeting in Geneva until 6 July.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/conectas.org\/noticias\/conselho-de-direitos-humanos-da-onu-saiba-o-que-e-e-como-funciona\">Find out more about how the Human Rights Council works<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The decision comes at a time when the country is facing criticism for its zero tolerance policy on migration, which includes splitting up migrant families at the border with Mexico, classified by Zeid Ra\u2019ad al-Hussein as \u2018unconscionable\u2019, on Monday 18 June. In May, the USA voted against a Council resolution to send international investigators to examine the <a href=\"https:\/\/conectas.org\/en\/news\/conectas-demands-brazilian-action-face-violence-gaza\">violent reaction of Israeli security forces against Palestinians on the Gaza Strip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States\u2019 withdrawal from the Council is regrettable, but not surprising. It is in line with previous decisions taken by the Trump administration, such as the country\u2019s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, in a strategy that goes against multilateral agreements to strengthen global policies that protect rights and combat violations and relapses. Even so, this withdrawal does not mean the end of the Council.
