Civil society organizations have asked that the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran be renewed for another year. The discussion occurred during the 37th Session of the UN Human Rights Council and the vote will take place on March 23.<\/p>\n

Iran is the stage of countless violations, including the rights of women and repression of protests. A special rapporteur has been monitoring the human rights situation in the country since 2011.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Iranian authorities have consistently failed to take action on vital reforms that would put its laws, policies and practices into conformity with international human rights law and standards,\u201d said the signatory organizations of the letter to justify the need to renew the mandate.<\/p>\n

Brazil used to vote in favor of renewing the mandate when the resolutions were voted in the Human Rights Council, but it has abstained since 2015.<\/p>\n

The letter was signed by more than 40 organizations, including Conectas, Impact Iran, HRAI (Human Rights Activists in Iran) and Civicus, and sent to the Member and Observer States of the UN Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n
