The Guiding Principles were approved by consensus, in June 2011, by the UN Human Rights Council. The 31 Principles are the result of six years of work by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Business and Human Rights, Professor John Ruggie. The three pillars of the Guiding Principles are:
PROTECT: the State duty to protect human rights;
RESPECT: the corporate responsibility to respect human rights;
REMEDY: the need for appropriate and effective remedies when these rights are breached by companies.
