World Bank Revises Complaints Mechanism For Adversely-Affected Communities

Conectas has signed a letter outlining concerns with the current functioning of the Inspection Panel, suggesting guidelines for improvements

In October 2018, the World Bank decided to revise the current guidelines of the Inspection Panel, an independent mechanism that receives complaints from people and communities affected by projects funded by the Bank.

Together with other organisations around the world, Conectas signed a letter outlining concerns with the current functioning of the Panel and suggested guidelines for improvements, such as a toolkit that is necessary for the efficient handling of complaints from communities, facilitating the attribution of accountability to violators and damage repair.

The World Bank Inspection Panel, created in 1993, is composed of independent agents. It seeks to guarantee autonomy from the institution’s interests and to provide greater security to people who decide to use it.
