Sur magazine offers grants to black authors

In addition to financial assistance, those selected will receive mentoring during the writing process.

Black authors can apply for grants to write for the 28th edition of Sur, International Human Rights Magazine. The grants are being offered by Conectas and Geledés – Institute for Black Women and the closing date is 4 September. The grant is for R$4.1 thousand and will be paid in three instalments.

The theme of Sur 28 will be “Race and Human Rights: Moving Structures”. The aim is a debate between academics and human rights activists on how race structures inequality today and how movements have led the fight against racism. In addition to financial assistance, those selected will receive mentoring throughout the writing process, between the months of September and November.

  •  Further information about the grants can be accessed here.

In addition to stating that they are black at the time of enrolment, candidates should have a background of research and/or activism in fighting racism and promoting racial equality. They must also justify how the grant will help them in writing the text and should be available to speak with mentors while working on their material. The objective of the grant is to encourage and support black activists and/or researchers in writing about their experiences and/or research into racism and human rights, in the Brazilian scenario.

Sur Magazine is freely accessible to an online public and in print version to over 20 thousand people, in more than 100 countries. The objective of the Magazine, published by Conectas is to influence the global agenda on human rights, producing, promoting and publishing innovative research and ideas, principally in the Global South, on the practice of human rights.
