Brazil currently only permits abortion in three cases: when the woman’s life is at risk, due to pregnancy-related causes; when the pregnancy is the result of rape and finally when the foetus is anencephalous. An action lodged with the Federal Supreme Court (STF) is seeking to ensure this right for more women and is calling for the decriminalisation of abortion up to the 12th week of gestation.

Conectas presented an amicus curiae at the ADPF 422 in favour of safe abortion, together with the Land, Work and Citizenship Institute (ITTC) and will be heard at the STF public hearing on 6 August.

The “Neither imprisoned, nor dead” campaign was established by feminist organisations and collectives from a number of different areas, as well as independent women who have united in widening the debate on the right to abortion in Brazil. Conectas is participating in the campaign which is organising activities, starting on Friday 3 August when the STF hearing begins.
