The São Paulo Municipal Commission to Eradicate Slave Labor (Cmtrae/SP) held its first meeting this Tuesday, April 2. The municipal human rights secretary, Rogério Sottili, conducted the meeting and signed a decree appointing the members, among them Conectas, which works on the subject through its “business and human rights” project.
The Commission was instituted by the municipal government on October 7, 2013, with the goal of uniting different sectors of society – business community, government and workers – to prevent and combat slave labor. São Paulo is the first city in Brazil to have a commission to eradicate this type of crime.
“For us, the commission is another forum for action against this crime against human rights. We believe in working together with civil society to combat and stamp out this medieval practice that still persists in many places in Brazil,” said Juana Kweitel, program director at Conectas.
