Registration open for the 41st edition of the Vladimir Herzog Award

Journalists, artists and photographic reporters can submit their work by 20 July. The award ceremony will be on 24 October



Journalists, artists and photographic reporters from all over Brazil have until 20 July to submit their work, to compete for the 41st Edition of the Vladimir Herzog Journalism Award for Amnesty and Human Rights. The Vladimir Herzog Award is nationwide and is considered to be one of the most important journalism prizes in the country. Every year it acknowledges work that enhances democracy and human rights.

In order to compete, candidates should go to the award site, fill in the application form and attach work that has been published or broadcast in the period between (and including) 24 July 2018 and 20 July 2019. In this edition, journalism work submitted under the following SIX categories will be accepted:

 1) Art – illustrations, editorial cartoons, cartoons, caricatures and cartoon strips published either in print or online

2) Photography – Photographs or a series of photographs published in print or online

3) Text journalism – Reports or published text in print or online

4) Audio journalism – Audio report or documentary

5) Video journalism – Video report or documentary

6) Multimedia journalism –  Multimedia reports published on the internet

The 41st Vladimir Herzog Journalism Award for Amnesty and Human Rights is promoted and organised by a committee made up of the following institutions: FENAJ (National Federation of Journalists; Union of Professional Journalists of the State of São Paulo; Justice and Peace Commission of the Archdiocese of São Paulo; ABRAJI (Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism; UNIC Rio (United Nations Information Centre in Brazil; Periferia em Movimento collective; ECA/USP (School of Communication and Art at the University of São Paulo); Vladimir Herzog Institute; Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association; São Paulo Chapter of the Brazilian Bar Association; Conectas Human Rights; São Paulo State Police Ombudsman’s Office and Intercom (Brazilian Association of Interdisciplinary Studies on Communication).

  • Period: 27 June to 20 July 2019
  • First stage of judging: 1 August to 15 September, via system
  • Second stage of judging and announcement of winners: Thursday 11 October, in public judging session at the São Paulo Municipal Chamber/ Oscar Pedroso Horta Room with live internet transmission from 10am to 2pm, on Auditórios on-line
  • Discussion with the Winners: Thursday 24 October, from 2pm to 6pm
  • Awards Ceremony: Thursday 24 October, 8pm
  • Venue: TUCARENA – Rua Monte Alegre, 1024, Perdizes, São Paulo
