Organizations respond to government intention to control NGOs in the Amazon

In a statement, they argue that the action is unconstitutional as it violates the freedom of civil society organizations

An article published on Monday, November 9, in the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo has exposed the intention of the Bolsonaro government to introduce measures to control the activities of NGOs that work to preserve the Amazon. In response, several civil society organizations classified the action as “very serious and repugnant”.

In a statement, they argued that this intention by the government is an affront to democracy and that the Brazilian Constitution forbids any type of State interference in the creation or functioning of Brazilian civil society organizations or in the positions taken by them.

In their response to the government, the organizations are calling on society to participate in initiatives to defend indigenous and traditional peoples and to support the struggle to defend the Amazon, democracy and constitutional rights.
