In April, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Paraguay delivered a statement to the IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights) in which they question the Inter-American System’s interpretation techniques, the range of its measures and the effects of international judgments.
In response, Conectas and over two hundred other institutions that are members of the International Coalition for Human Rights Organisations in the Americas and other civil society groups express their condemnation and concern over these allegations.
In the document, the organisations argue that the nature of this stance is very worrying as it curbs the activities, authority and autonomy of the Inter-American Commission and the Human Rights Tribunal, all of which undermines the promotion and protection of rights throughout the continent.
Lastly, the institutions also encourage the countries to abstain from taking these measures, suggest they develop internal processes of reflection that take into consideration their current situations of violence and impunity and recommend they adopt norms that comply to a greater extent with the recommendations of the International Human Rights System.
