On Friday, March 12, civil society organizations signed a letter addressed to Member States of the United Nations Human Rights Council expressing their concern over respect for human rights in Iran.
The letter exposes crimes against human rights committed in the country, drawing attention to the executions that have been carried out. Moreover, it reveals the abuse of political power that suppresses freedom of expression, religion and belief.
Groups of activists who campaign for improvements in the legal and social realm are persecuted, arrested and, in some cases, executed. For these reasons, the letter urges the authorities to take steps to improve the human rights situation in Iran.
“It is essential to engage with the Iranian authorities on issues of concern and to make potentially life-saving urgent appeals and other communications,” reads the document.
