Migration on the agenda

In an interview with SUR, UN special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants discusses the “migration crisis” in Europe

Migration is on the agenda: world leaders came together at the UN General Assembly on Monday, September 19, and adopted the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, which expresses the political will of each country to protect the rights of migrants, to save lives and share responsibility for large migration movements on a global scale. On Tuesday (the 20th), also at the General Assembly, United States President Barack Obama organized the Leaders’ Summit on the Global Refugee Crisis to galvanize new commitments on funding for humanitarian appeals and international organizations, and on shelter and inclusion for refugees. To learn more about the topic, read the interview given by François Crepeau to SUR – International Journal on Human Rights on the migration crisis in Europe. He talks about which measures the continent needs to take and calls on the press and civil society organizations to be the voice of migrants and tell their stories to a public that is currently influenced by politicians who are content on selling negative images in order to secure votes.
